Holiday Gift Giving on a Budget

Christmas gifts

Are you trying to figure out the perfect gift for a family member or friend? Well we have some ideas they will appreciate and may even cherish. We even have some last minute gift ideas you can make at home. No need to go to the store and purchase something they may already have. Whether it's for Christmas or a birthday, here are a few ideas to get you started.

1. Start with your budget

Before you buy a gift, consider a budget. Write down the lowest amount and highest amount you are willing to spend. Try to keep your spending somewhere in the middle. This could alleviate any stress from unnecessary spending. While budgeting can be tricky, it also can be fun to see all your savings.

Example of a budget:

Recipient Name    Gift     Amount         Total

Auntie Jane Doe            Socks    10.00 10.80

If you're someone who likes to equally spend on each individual, having the budget written down could help you stay on course with your spending. The information can also be used as a shopping list. You could also save time by sharing the list with another person to get help with locating the items.

2. Find the best sales and discounts

Take advantage of the price- comparison tools such as Honey. With Honey you have the option to download the extension in your browser. When you want to use the Honey tool, you simply navigate to the website of the item and activate the tool. A window will pop-up to show you other retailers that might carry that same item at a lower rate.

There are a number of websites like our Find Deals and Earn that have coupons and deals listed for a number of online retailers. Some will even share exclusive coupons just for signing up for their mailing list.

3. DIY when you don't have the funds

When you don't have the money during the holiday season for gifts, consider making something. Look around your home and see what items can be repurposed. There are a number of Facebook groups with a ton of ideas that use only Dollar Tree items. We recommend putting a little note in the gift letting the person know it's handmade.

Another option would be to re-gift a gift. Maybe you received two of something recently or have something new that you know a family or friend wants. The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to give what you have.

4. Here are some DIY gift ideas:

Painting:

Don’t worry about knowing how to paint; abstract paintings are more popular than ever. Think about lines, shapes, and neutral colors if you choose to create one. If you don’t have canvas or paper, you could use other materials or even paint over another painting.

We found a great example of recreating a painting on Tiktok. You never know, you might be the next Picasso.

Bake:

Nothing beats fresh cookies from the oven. A 12-pack of cookies is usually affordable. Remember to consider the recipient's allergies. If you don’t want to ask them directly, check with a family member who may know.

Cookies Under $5 dollars

Walnut Chocolate Chip by Betty Crocker $3.49

Cookie Dough Chocolate Chip $4.59

Amazon Brand - Happy Belly Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

Toll House Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough $4.29

Books:

There's nothing like sharing a good book with a friend. This is a great opportunity to build a bond. If you’re not sure about the genre the person would be interested in, maybe check their social media for hints.

If you're pressed for time, consider purchasing an eBook instead of a printed copy. eBooks are convenient and can be easily shared. There are several platforms that offer books for under $5. This is a great way to support others as well.

Top 3 places to buy eBooks:

Amazon

Barnes and Nobles

Kobo

Printed Art:

If painting isn't your preference, consider crafting a unique digital image using a program like Canva, which boasts thousands of premade templates that can be transformed into artwork. Collaboration with another family member during the creative process is also an option.

The resulting artwork can serve various purposes, such as a screensaver, wallpaper, or print-out.

πŸŒŸπŸŽ„Whether you choose to buy, make, or re-gift, remember, it’s the thought that counts. Have a happy and safe holiday!
